(June 1 – September 21, 2012) In 1966, Creede Repertory Theatre mounted its first season in an old opera/movie house in this former mining town. The company was founded by 19-year-old Steve Grossman and a dozen of his fellow students from the University of Kansas; their first show, Mr. Roberts, was received with wild enthusiasm by an audience consisting largely of people who had never before seen a live theatrical performance. One of the few true repertory companies left in the United States, CRT offers a variety of plays showcasing the talents of its resident company (which numbered 75 as of 2011), and its rotating rep schedule allows audiences to see as many as five or six different plays within a week’s time. The company has become so popular that it has extended its annual summer season through September. In summer 2011, CRT opened a second stage, the $1.8 million Ruth Humphreys Brown Theatre; that same year, the company expanded its Front Range partnerships and mounted two highly successful productions, Unnecessary Farce at the Lone Tree Arts Center and The Road to Mecca at the Arvada Center.
