Developing ways for diverse audiences to encounter film via creative and thought-provoking experiences is the mission of the Denver Film Society, which presents a lively weekly program of new exclusives, revivals of American and foreign films, and documentaries (totaling more than 600 films per year!). A multitude of special series and symposia are also featured at the Starz FilmCenter and the DFS puts together the noted annual festival Film on the Rocks, a concert and film series held at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre all summer long. The society’s efforts culminate each November in the Starz Denver Film Festival, an 11-day celebration of cinema that includes red-carpet premieres, international screenings, and awards ceremonies. Among the awards handed out at the event are the John Cassavettes Award and the Maysles Brothers Award for Best Documentary.
