EXIT has been presenting “indie theatre” in downtown San Francisco since 1983. The company commissions, develops, and produces new plays; provides production support and low cost theater rentals to small companies; hosts playwrights-in-residence; and produces the annual San Francisco Fringe Festival, the largest such event in the Bay Area, as well as DIVAfest, dedicated to creating new works by women writers. EXIT operates a “theatreplex” in the Tenderloin district; the four venues in the complex range in size from 35 seats to 90 seats and annually host 100 independent theatre companies.
