Garth Fagan is perhaps most widely known as the Tony Award-winning choreographer for the Broadway production of Walt Disney’s The Lion King. Drawing from Afro-Caribbean techniques, American modern dance traditions, jazz and a smidgen of ballet, the Jamaican-born Fagan has developed a distinctive fusion style that is both casually loose and dynamically precise. His own company, Garth Fagan Dance, has toured the world several times over since its founding in 1970 and five of its members have been honored with “Bessie” Awards. Although the ensemble is based in Rochester, it is primarily a touring company, travelling nationally and internationally throughout the year and presenting an annual season at the Joyce Theater in New York City.
