This German-American club is an object lesson in preserving one’s heritage, having celebrated its distinctive place in Connecticut and greater New England culture since 1858. Begun in Hartford, but located in nearby Newington since 1966, the Sängerbund takes particular pride in its Chorus—in existence since the club’s founding—which meets to sing both German and English songs on Friday evenings from September through June. The group performs twice a year. HSB also has its own folk-dancing group, and hosts a biannual Bierfest.
