John Jasperse’s Bessie award-winning contemporary dance company has been called “thoughtful” and “pensive”, and, indeed, the company provokes audiences to connect to these qualities in themselves. Jasperse’s choreography is governed by a corporal language that undulates and connects, revealing both a physical and mental unfolding that is all of a purpose. With his exploratory and questioning mind, his work is philosophical, theatrical, and sometimes humorous, always revealing the thinking behind the moving image.
Jasperse moved to New York in 1996, after graduating from Sarah Lawrence College, and created Thin Man Dance, Inc., a not-for-profit company to support his choreographic work. Since then, the John Jasperse Company has gone on to premier pieces in the United States, Latin America, Israel, Japan, and Europe. The company is also involved in various residencies, with Jasperse teaching workshops and Master classes in America and abroad. (MK)
