The Madison Symphony Orchestra (MSO) distinguishes itself from other American orchestras through deliberate choices for its repertoire: the ensemble makes a point to not perform “pops concerts,” instead focusing on classical music’s canonic compositions.  And with the recent commissioning of the Overture Concert Organ in 2001, works like Mozart’s Concerto for Flute & Harp and Saint-Saëns’s “Organ Symphony” are prospective concert selections.  Additional concert events include organ recitals given at MSO’s Overture Hall, as well as performances by the Rhapsodie String Quartet.

The orchestra’s education and outreach programs include the Young People’s Concert Series; Up Close & Musical, which teaches students how to effectively listen to classical music; performances and master classes given by renowned MSO guest artists; and Heartstrings, which brings performances to local healthcare facilities.

Also of note is Club 201, a series of events combining the concert experience with after-hours parties, designed for young professionals between the ages of 21 and 39.  Additionally, MSO dress rehearsals are open to the public and free of charge.
