Founded in 1980 by Moses Pendelton, a choreographer widely considered one of today’s most innovative artists, MOMIX has been exceeding expectations with each performance for more than thirty years. The company is made of what Pendleton calls “dancer illusionists,” who help to further his vision of surrealistic landscapes made of bodies, props, light and shadow, and plenty of humor.
Pendleton, an original member of Philobolus Dance Theater, has performed with and choreographed for numerous companies throughout the years, including the Joffrey Ballet and the Deutch Opera. His work for stage, film, and television is prolific and includes Dance in America for PBS as well as participation in IMAGINE, one of the first 3D IMAX movies.
Along with Associate Director Cynthia Quinn, who began performing with MOMIX in 1983, the company tours the world with the spectacular fruits of its inimitable labor using unstoppable creative vision. A piece like Lunar Sea is a perfect example of the limitlessness of imagination that MOMIX displays, where we see what dance would look like on the moon. Pendleton’s ability is such that he creates physical imagery of outlandish potency and creativity; we humans are hard-pressed to match him even in our dreams.
