Founded in 1992, Rennie Harris Puremovement was created to chronicle the essence of hip-hop culture. The company’s dedication to exploring new ideas, creating work that deals with universal themes, and validating the significance of the art form itself has made RHPM one of the most exciting dance companies working today.
Harris, a leading hip-hop spokesperson as well as choreographer, was voted one of the most influential people in Philadelphia history over the last century by Philadelphia Magazine, and he has been compared to legends like Alvin Ailey and Bob Fosse. In 2007 Harris was named Artist of the Year by then-First Lady of Pennsylvania Marjorie O. Rendell, and he continues to gather accolades from all over the country and beyond.
Harris has created choreography for many companies outside of his own, including Phildanco, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. RHPM itself tours worldwide, with a varied repertoire including four full-length productions. The company’s hip hop opera “Rome & Jewels, ” won a Bessie award for its innovative look at Shakespeare’s tale of two lovers. Another notable piece is “Facing Mekka,” Harris’ tribute to both African and hip-hop culture, with its inspirational solo, “Lorenzo’s Oil.” Watching Harris’ company of dancers is so vicariously thrilling that it is almost impossible to keep still. Whether they are dancing in unison or individually, the power generated on stage is palpable, visceral, and completely engaging.
In addition to performances, RHPM is also known for their outreach programs, Master Classes, and lectures based on the history of Hip Hop.
