Step into old-world charm and class at this swanky Upper East Side location. Slide into a plush leather seat and admire the original Ludwig Bemelmans (creator of Madeline) murals that line the walls. Then unwind with the sounds of an array of live music emanating from the center of the room. The music schedule changes often, and very rarely will you find anything less than the finest pianists and vocalists at the helm of your evening. (Jim Caruso, Hilary Kole, Billy Stritch and Chris Gillespie, to name a few.) Be forewarned, the cover charge can be steep, and the food & drink prices steeper still. Also, there are no reservations and everything is first-come, first-served when it comes to seating, so be prepared for some old-world standing in line as a part of your evening. All that aside, it’s worth coming here at least once if you live in NYC or visit often and feel like trekking to the Upper East Side. Lean back with your $20 cocktail and imagine yourself a part of the long tradition of fine drinking and great music at Bemelmans. (MS)
