Upstream is a professional St. Louis theater with “an international outlook.” Since 2005, the company has presented plays by authors from Cuba to Croatia, including nearly a dozen U.S. or world premieres. Upstream has received 18 Kevin Kline Award nominations, and in 2009 was named “Best Theater Company” by the Riverfront Times.

The company operates under a full contract with Actors’ Equity Association, and is a member of the Theatre Communications Group. Some highlights of recent seasons include productions of Athol Fugard’s Blood Knot, Rick Foster’s The Starry Messenger, Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, David Greig’s Outlying Islands, and Alexander Borinsky’s The Polish Egg Man.
