Housed at the spectacular Wells Theatre, Virginia Stage’s artistic drive has made it one of the most prominent regional companies in the area. Mixing 21st century artistry with a traditional sense of drama, VSC’s five-show season regularly includes popular titles (Romeo & Juliet, A Christmas Carol) alongside area debuts of recent New York hits (Doubt, Contact) and exciting new works, like the world premiere of the Tony Award winning musical The Secret Garden. Founded in 1968, the company’s mission has grown to include a prominent educational outreach program, offering performances and touring productions to local school groups, and the American Soil Project, fostering the development of art focusing on life in southeastern Virginia. The theatre’s 2011 season will include the pre-Broadway premiere of the new musical, SCKBSTD, directed by Tony Award winning Kathleen Marshall.
