Tampa/St. Petersburg: Theater

Tampa Theater: Theater Around Tampa

Below are our Tampa Theater recommendations, with information on location, admission, transportation/parking, theater history and other points of interest in Tampa Art.

American Stage Theatre

In 2009, American Stage moved four blocks, to the new Raymond James Theatre, across from Williams Park in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg. The new venue is larger (182 seats), with large lobbies and other amenities, and a bank only a block away offers free parking during the performances. The building is part of the downtown center of St. Petersburg College, and is adjacent to the Florida International Museum.

Asolo Repertory Theatre

From June to October, in two theaters at the Florida State University Center for the Performing Arts, dozens of actors gather to perform a high wire act known as “rotating rep”. Nine plays throughout the season – a different show nearly every night of the week – performed by the same group of actors. Florida Studio Theatre (FST)

Florida Studio Theatre produces mostly contemporary work—dramas, comedies, musical revues, one-person shows, and plays that have had recent New York productions. There is something for just about everybody at FST, though seldom does the company produce anything particularly weird or “artsy”. In keeping with company’s mission to produce new work, there is the New Play Development Program and the …more…

Jobsite Theatre

Founded in 1998, Jobsite is the resident theater company of the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts (formerly the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center). The company focuses on the creation of new works and “the exploration of material that is often overlooked in the hustle to produce “what’s hot” coming out of New York.”

In 2009-2010, Jobsite marked the …more…

Focusing on works ‘challenging the thresholds of intolerance and insensitivity,’ Stageworks has been a Tampa institution for nearly thirty years. Presenting five diverse shows each year, Stageworks’ past seasons have included important area premieres of controversial new works (Frozen, The Memory of Water, Stop Kiss) alongside popular comedies (Brighton Beach Memoirs, Greater Tuna) and intimate stagings of classics ranging from Greek Tragedy (Medea) to …more…

The Florida Repertory Theatre

In just a little over ten years, Florida Rep has become an important new player on the Southwest Florida theatre scene. Recently singled out by the Wall Street Journal for “setting the bar high for all comers,” the emerging group is beautifully housed at historic Arcade Theatre, a newly renovated movie house in Ft. Myers.

Florida Rep’s annual season combines classics (Scapino, Romeo and Juliet) with contemporary …more…
