(May 23 – October 21, 2012) The Barrington Stage Company has, in less than two decades, become one of the premier summer theater festivals in America. The Stage’s philosophy is three-fold: it aims to produce top-notch mainstage work while at the same time developing new plays and musicals and finding new and compelling ways to get people, especially young people, interested in the theater. It had already won a plethora of regional awards, including three Elliott Norton/Boston Theater Critics Awards, when in 2004 BSC scored its greatest triumph to date, winning a pair of Tonys for its The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; several of BSC’s other productions have made it to Off-Broadway, including Freud’s Last Session in 2009 and Ears on a Beatle in 2003. Moreover, the BSC’s home base, Pittsfield, is a prime example of the fabled “historic New England town,” and those of an adventurous spirit can find great reward in just taking a ramble around town; as befitting its long history with baseball, Pittsfield is also home to ancient Wahconah Park, one of the last remaining wooden ballparks, which is also well worth a visit.
