According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, GENRE means “a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content” as in the mystery genre, the genre of classic poetry or symphonic music genre. (Genre is also a term for paintings that depicts scenes from everyday life.)
At Arts America we classify American art into seven genres:
• Art Museums
• Theater
• Classical Music
• Opera
• Jazz
• Dance
• Film
These are not “official” classifications – and there can be overlap (opera companies that do American musicals) – but these classifications work for most people most of the time. (Our city pages also feature sections on performance venues and festivals.)
Each Genre Page above offers an introduction written by the genre editor, recommendations (either city or company) to get you in the right direction as well as helpful web resources.
So check out your favorite genre – or better yet introduce yourself to an art that could become your second favorite!
