(August 30 – September 10, 2012) With its red rocks backdrop, the Moab Music Festival, held each September (and founded in 1992) in Utah, offers concert experiences unattainable elsewhere, such as its Grotto Concerts chamber music series accessible only by boat and the combination concert/hike of the Music Walks series. From nature trails and parks to ranches and spas, this festival really is about “location, location, location.”

While concerts prominently feature music by luminaries like Bach, Mozart, and Brahms, contemporary music is given its due with performances by groups such as “new music” string quartet ETHEL and mandolinist Chris Thile’s experimental bluegrass band Punch Brothers. There are also several free film screenings. Athletic types should note that the festival is in close proximity to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. (DK)
