Known for its landscape and historical significance (both Yellowstone Park and the site of the battle of Little Bighorn are nearby), Billings, Montana has never been synonymous with high art. But, in 1999, after much hard work and frequent disappointment, tenacious opera lovers in this Western city finally established their very own opera company, the Rimrock Opera, which has faithfully produced 1-2 full operas each year since. Rimrock is also seeing to it that younger generations develop an appreciation for the form through initiatives like the Rimrock Opera Chorus for Kids (ROCK) and Opera 101 classes.
