A Nickel a Ticket for Off-Off-Broadway

Here’s the thing about theater: It’s great. Few things in the arts can match a night out at a good, quality show. It’s also – and stop me if you’ve heard this one before – almost impossible to make any money at it, unless you’re a giant Broadway spectacle. Theater arts majors, unless they’re backed by money from elsewhere, may as well be majoring in waiting tables, which is a huge shame and also shows no signs of changing anytime soon. Beginning in August, however, a number of New York theater companies will start donating a nickel from each ticket sold to bolster the financial fortunes of Off-Off-Broadway, and now all that remains is to convince Broadway to do the same.
