Alabama Symphony’s edgy series begins new season on Thursday

(Michael Huebner, The Birmingham News) Alabama Symphony’s “Classical Edge” series has contributed in a big way toward the orchestra’s winning ASCAP’s top award for adventurous programming for 2011.

With music by Jonny Greenwood, Paul Lansky, Luciana Souza, DJ Spooky and Joshua Redman crossing musical genres, the series helped place ASO in the national spotlight.

The first concert in this season’s series, titled “Radioheadings 2.0,” again has Greenwood venturing out from alt rock to compose “Doghouse,” a piece for string trio and orchestra. Violinist Daniel Szasz, violist Michael Fernandez and cellist Warren Samples will solo.
