Bluto on Broadway? Yep, they’re planning an ‘Animal House’ Musical

Yesterday was the thirtieth anniversary of the death of John Belushi, and while the occasion is still one of distinct solemnity, the impact is somewhat diminished now, as time continues to pass for the rest of us. Belushi only made it to 33, but he left a pretty indelible legacy, not only with Saturday Night Live but also via The Blues Brothers and the still cruelly underrated 1941. And then there’s Animal House, in which Belushi almost literally set the screen on fire. Now a team of Broadway big shots, including Casey Nicholaw, the Tony-winning co-director of The Book of Mormon, are laying plans to bring a musical version of the House to Broadway. No dates, no cast, no nothing yet but the Barenaked Ladies confirmed to score and the aforementioned Nicholaw to direct and choreograph. Still, though, an Animal House musical. If there’s a heaven, Belushi must be rolling right now. (Dave Itzkoff, ArtsBeat, The New York Times)
