I Remember Mama

The 2016–17 Arts Radio Network Theater Season presents a special Mother’s Day weekend production of I Remember Mama on Saturday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 14 at 2 p.m. In the series, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Arts Radio Network Theatre Project and WLRN bring the golden age of radio back to glorious life with some of South Florida’s finest actors.

I Remember Mama debuted on Broadway in 1944 and was so popular it spawned a movie adaptation, a long-running TV series and, 35 years later, a Broadway musical with music by Richard Rodgers. The Lux Radio Theater opened its 1948 season with the adaptation for radio.

The radio play follows the life of Norwegian immigrant Marta Hanson, who keeps a firm but loving hand on her household of four children, a devoted husband and a highly-educated lodger who reads Charles Dickens to the family every evening. Through financial crises, illnesses and the small triumphs of everyday life, Marta maintains her optimism and sense of humor, traits she passes on to her aspiring-author daughter.

Performances are held in the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center where, starting one hour prior to the performance and during intermission, sumptuous sandwiches, salads, snacks and desserts are available for purchase with convenient walk-up service. A full cash bar is also available.

Tickets are $25. Ticketmaster is the only official ticketing service of the Broward Center, Parker Playhouse and affiliated venues. Buy tickets online at BrowardCenter.org or Ticketmaster.com; by phone at 954-462-0222; in person at Ticketmaster outlets or the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office.
