If there’s a more classically Romantic tale that Goethe’s Sorrows of Young Werther – scratch that, there is no more classically Romantic tale. Guy meets girl, guy instantly falls in love with girl, guy cannot have girl because girl is betrothed to another. You can see where this is going. Not content with leaving such weepy agony on the page, Jules Massenet wrote an opera around the story in 1892, and now, for the first time in its history, the Minnesota Opera’s staging it.
