Rare Bill Bollinger Exhibition Up in Long Island City

They don’t show the work of minimalist sculptor Bill Bollinger very often any more, for a number of reasons: the vagaries of fashion, of course, but also the difficulty in installing Bollinger’s work in many cases; he was the sort of artist whose work’s success depended directly on how it was placed in the gallery, which adds a whole other layer of complexity to the process. Also, there was apparently a disaster of a show in 1970 or so, Bollinger: Sculpture, which went over so poorly that it basically dragged Bollinger’s reputation to the bottom of the ocean. He’s a curious and intriguing artist, though – he had a degree in aerospace engineering – and this new retrospective, simply titled Bill Bollinger: The Retrospective, looks to have a fair amount to recommend it. It’s up at SculptureSpace in Long Island City through July 30. (FULL ARTICLE: Charlie Schultz, Blouin ARTINFO)
