Rex Reed Does Ira Gershwin

Is Rex Reed still a movie critic? Yes, he is, that’s right, he writes for the New York Observer. Took me a moment. Reed’s always been a man of broad tastes and appetites – I mean, the guy was on the Gong Show, and might well have been the judge that gave Homer Simpson and Barney Gumble more gongs than the break-dancing robot that caught fire – and he’d apparently long had this idea for a revue of Ira Gershwin’s solo work, the things that he wrote without his brother, which amounted to a fairly voluminous catalog that seldom gets its due. Hence, Reed debuted The Man That Got Away in New York about three years ago, and now it’s meandered its way out to the Bay Area: the show gets its West Coast premiere this Friday at Kanbar Hall.
