Nicholas Payton came ripping up out of New Orleans in the early 1990s, trumpet blaring, almost immediately establishing himself as a major force on the contemporary jazz scene. Except that Nicholas Payton does not dig the term “jazz”, not at all, and he’s written quite a lot this year, on both his blog and Twitter, about why that is and what he means by that.
