Founded in Boston in 1988, Liss Fain Dance makes its home in San Francisco , with local performances at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Z Space. Besides proscenium work, the company also performs in on-site venues, as well as within installation creations that enhance the already evocative material that is signature to Ms. Fain’s vision.
Abstract, dynamic, emotional, fluid, and highly intelligent, LFD presents non-narrative work that fuses the elemental movement of modern dance with the precision and lightness of classical ballet. Fain’s underpinnings come from classical elements: dance, music, and literature, but her focus is on collaboration with the contemporary. She works with modern composers, lighting and set designers, videographers, actors, and technologists to create pieces that express, in her words, the “unpredictable course of events that comprise one’s life.” Ever thought provoking, she draws audiences in through her liquid sense of movement and an internal story that resonates.
LFD tours throughout the United States in festivals and other venues, and has created a strong presence in Poland, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Belarus. Time will certainly bring the company to greater global attention as they continue to make the beautifully wrought pieces that are their signature.
