Call it a theatre bucket list — make sure you check out all the new shows opening up this fall

Recently, a friend gave me some words of wisdom. They went something like this: “Life is short; so try to keep things interesting.” I translated that into the following: You should always have something to look forward to because it helps you get through the slower times.

To that end, I took great pleasure in reading through the latest 2012-2013 calendar of events I received from the Fisher Theatre. There are six great plays being performed during this season, and I plan on attending at least one or two or even six of them. The prices are certainly affordable and the shows look exciting.

The shows start in September with “Billy Elliot: The Musical.” From there you can see “La Cage,” starting George Hamilton, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” which looks good for families with older children, “Memphis,” in April 2013 and “Catch Me if You Can” in May 2013. The one I’m dying to see is the “The Book of Mormon,” which will start in March 2013.

The one I’m particularly excited to check out, though, is “Billy Elliot.” I loved the movie and I’m intrigued to find out how they staged the play. The musical has earned great reviews all around. And you gotta think it will be a stunner as the recent winner of ten Tony Awards including Best Musical. Tickets for the Detroit performance of Billy Elliot the Musical will go on sale Sunday, June 10 at 10 a.m.

Performance times for Billy Elliot the Musical, appearing Sep. 4 -16, 2012 at the Fisher Theatre, located at 3011 W. Grand Blvd., in Detroit, are: Tuesday through Saturday performances at 8:00 p.m.; Sunday evening performances at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m.

Ticket prices for the Detroit engagement of Billy Elliot the Musical range from $39-$89 (includes parking and facility fees) and go on sale June 10, 2012 at the Fisher Theatre box office and all Ticketmaster locations. Tickets will also be available for purchase online at www.ticketmaster.com or www.BroadwayinDetroit.com, and by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-982-2787.
