Old Globe Theatre set to launch ninth annual Summer Shakespeare Festival

“I stuck my neck out,” late Old Globe Theatre founding artistic director R. Craig Noel said in 2003, “and I’ve been terribly stubborn about it.” He was referring to the return of Shakespeare repertory at the Globe, which suspended in 1984 after 35 years—too many actors had been lured away by the considerable monetary prospects in television and film.

Since the Globe’s 2004 reopening of its Summer Shakespeare Festival, Noel’s gamble …more…

‘The Blessing of a Broken Heart’ to play at SD Jewish festival

Every May 8, Sherri Mandell and her family visit a desert cave in Tekoa, Israel, where they spend the night. In this case, “family” is only as real as a mother’s memories and as imaginary as the departure of a human soul—for on May 8, 2001, Mandell’s 13-year-old son Koby was murdered in that grotto in an act attributed to Palestinian terrorists. Life’s somewhat more manageable now, with Mandell a …more…

‘Ai Weiwei: Zodiac Heads/Circle of Animals: Gold’ at the MCASD (Downtown)

The work of Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has long been the subject of examination, as he was detained a year ago by the Chinese government as part of a larger crackdown in China on people the government considered dissidents. Locally, this led to a sit-in at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD), Downtown, in protest of Weiwei’s detainment. ...more...

‘Crossing The Divide’ at Distinction Gallery

The work of San Francisco-based artist Jenn Porreca is a surreal and stunning blend of cultural iconography, religious iconography as well as her own personal narratives. With dreamlike strokes and mysterious undertones, the work of Porreca draws inspiration from many sources, both cultural and personal—from San Francisco street art and Manga to European silhouette and folklore artists of the early 1900s to the religious iconography of her own childhood. All these sources of inspiration work together in an eclectic way, breathing new life and meaning into Porreca’s forms and layers. ...more...

With new venues, San Diego regains some pre-recessionary momentum

Sean Cox, co-artistic director of Encinitas’ Intrepid Shakespeare Company, took a second’s stock from the lobby of the Clayton E. Liggett Theatre, the stage wing of the city’s new Performing Arts Center on the San Dieguito Academy high school campus. It’s enough that Intrepid, known for its quality shows and its Shakespeare-intensive work in county schools, is the venue’s anchor troupe. And it’s enough that it opened Arthur Miller’s adaptation of An Enemy of the People to positive reviews at the venue earlier in February. ...more...

Mingei International Museum’s latest exhibition, “San Diego’s Craft Revolution: From Post-War Modern to California Design” showcases the work of over sixty artists and thirty years of undocumented local art history. The exhibition considers the work of local craftsmen and craftswomen from the postwar period of the 1940s through the 1970s. Works range in medium from sleek copper sculptures to handmade chairs and jewelry. While the range of works is quite eclectic, what stands out the most is the design infused into these everyday objects and the artists behind the works themselves. ...more...

San Diego’s Latin Take on Jazz

When I think of Thanksgiving, I think of a calorie-filled holiday complete with loud music and even louder family members. It is a time for loved ones to enjoy each other’s company following a hectic year. With that being said, jazz is perhaps the most dynamic genre of music that is applicable to this time of year. It has the ability to calm or liven a party, which …more…

‘Infinite Balance’ Creates A Global Buzz

“Infinite Balance: Artists and the Environment,” currently on view at San Diego’s Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) seeks to address global concerns around sustainability through an eclectic mix of small and large scale photography. “Infinite Balance,” in fact, is also the first U.S. presentation of artists shortlisted for the Prix Pictect, the world’s leading prize for photography and sustainability. It’s no wonder then that the diverse backgrounds of the artists featured, from China to Germany, speaks to the larger message of the exhibition at hand. ...more...
