On Monday, April 29, 2013 the Plaza Theatre will inaugurate a new series of staged readings of new and unpublished scripts called Fresh Pages. “The primary purpose of Fresh Pages is to give our patrons an opportunity to hear new and unpublished scripts read by professional actors in a simple, uncluttered setting,” said Kenneth Kay, Plaza Theatre’s new Director of Education and Outreach.  The debut reading for the first installment of Fresh Pages will be a new comedy entitled Can I Really Date a Guy Who Wears a Yarmulke? by Amy Holson-Schwartz. In addition to the reading, there will also be a brief discussion with the cast, the director, and the writer at the end of the reading.

Can I Really Date a Guy Who Wears a Yarmulke? Is a love story that focuses on Eleanor, a smart, savvy young woman whose secular brand of Judaism might include the occasional latke, but definitely does not include God.  Then she meets Aaron, aka Dr. Right. He’s got the brains, the looks, and the wit… but wait!  He’s also got a serious case of religion.  Can Eleanor see past his yarmulke to find love?

The play Can I Really Date a Guy Who Wears a Yarmulke? originally premiered as part of the 2010 Midtown International Theatre Festival, playing to packed houses at The Beckett at Theatre Row and winning the coveted Producers Award. This Plaza Theatre production, directed by Kenneth Kay, features cast members Julie Kleiner, Jim Ballard, Gregg Weiner, Deborah L. Sherman, Howard Elfman and Beth Dimon.

Fresh Pages readings are open to the public. The cost is $10 and no reservations are required, however seating is limited and on a first come, first served basis.  The readings will take place at the Plaza Theatre which is located in Manalapan at 262 South Ocean Blvd. in the Plaza del Mar Shopping Plaza.
