Detroit is home to the Michigan Opera Theatre (MOT), the principal opera company of Michigan, and one of the few major opera companies to own its own theatre. Although not the oldest opera company around, MOT has risen to become a regional force in both opera and ballet. Each season, MOT features several productions, both of standard repertoire and newer works. Within the past few years, MOT has premiered new operas by composers, such as Richard Danielpour and David DiChiera.
In addition to the Michigan Opera Theatre, the University Musical Society in Ann Arbor hosts both professional and student opera productions throughout the year, either at the Mendelssohn Theatre, Hill Auditorium, or the Power Center for Performing Arts. (Kevin Wilt)
