Jackson Arts: Art Scene in Jackson

Jackson takes great pride in its distinguished jazz and blues- based musical heritage, as well as its history as a flashpoint of progress in the civil rights era. The city hosts regular presentations of classical repertoire performed by the accomplished Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and is home to a professional ballet company. Add into the mix a significant number of art galleries and various theater performances geared towards audiences of all ages, and Jackson truly earns its nickname of “The City With Soul”.

Mississippi Chorus

The Mississippi Chorus began with a call for singers to augment Crossgates United Methodist Church’s 1989 performance of Handel’s “Messiah.” The overwhelming response precipitated the creation of a community choir that would eventually become today’s ensemble. The Chorus frequently appears as a guest ensemble with the Mississippi Symphony and performs its own concerts of choral masterworks and new pieces, as well as the occasional popular song. Founded in 1944, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra sprang from a deep passion for music that continues to ring through Jackson, MS. Today the ensemble performs over 120 concerts around the state, reaching 75,000 Mississippians each year. Concerts series include the “Bravo” Series, featuring masterworks with world-class soloists; a Pops series and a popular Chamber series, which takes place in venues around the Jackson area.
