Identical Twins Jazz Up San Diego

Identical twin jazz duo, the Mattson 2, have been taking the San Diego jazz scene by storm with their contemporary take on the genre. The pair, namely Jonathan and Jared Mattson, are crossing boundaries with their distinct sound and even more distinct fashion sense.

The duo has been on the jazz scene for a few years now under the Indie label, Galaxia …more…

The Neon Museum

The Neon Museum is where Las Vegas neon signs retire. This non-profit museum was founded in 1996 by the Allied Arts Council of Southern Nevada and the City of Las Vegas. The idea for the Museum began when the Allied Arts Council and Young Electric Sign Company (YESCO) decided that they wanted to preserve the signs as a representation of Las Vegas history.

The museums mission statement states: We collect, preserve, study and …more…

August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble: Pittsburgh’s Dynamic Force

The Dynamic Women of Dance ~ photo: Cassie Kay Rusnak

It’s for a good reason that Dance Magazine has placed AWCDE on their top 25 list for 2012.  This Pittsburgh, PA company has been astounding audiences with its highly trained dancers who, in the words of Director Greer Reed-Jones, are “hungry, committed, and passionate.”

With their first season in 2009-2010, the company demonstrated its commitment to bringing different ethnicities together to …more…

‘God of Carnage’ at the Alliance Theatre

Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage is having a moment. On the heels of its Tony Award-winning 2009 run on Broadway, the play has been popping up in stagings across the country, and Roman Polanski’s film adaptation, starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz, is still screening in multiplexes.

And now the dark comedy, translated from the French by Christopher Hampton, arrives in Atlanta for a run at …more…

“Mound,” Stop-Motion Magic by Allison Schulnik

A captivating piece I saw at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art recently was a stop-motion animated film by Allison Schulnik entitled “Mound.” Shulnik created over 100 figures for the film over a period of several months.  The December 16, 2011 New York Times article “Allison Schulnik: Mound” by Ken Johnson eloquently describes the odd and entrancing animation:

In this 4 minute 20 second video, dozens of lumpy, ghoulish figures — …more…

Oliver Stone and Werner Herzog at The New York Public Library

Let’s be honest. Most of us take our local library for granted. We always tell ourselves that we’ll take advantage of the free archive of books, magazines, and newspapers that the library offers, and then we never even get around to signing up for a library card.  But libraries are more than just institutions that offer free literature and web access; often, they host some of the best cultural events …more…

Sharon Marie Cline at Angels

Over the years, many of us in the L.A. jazz community have been dismayed to witness the closure of some of our favorite venues, such as Donte’s and Shelly’s Manne-Hole.  So we definitely have something to cheer about when a new club materializes on the scene.

A few weeks ago when I caught the Red Hill Quartet’s recent gig  (*), the group’s vibes player, Ricky Luther, told me about a new …more…

Another 48 Hours

I just returned from the latest installment of Seattle ACT Theatre’s popular theater event, 14/48: The World’s Quickest Theater Festival. The festival was staged at ACT Theatre for the fourth consecutive year as part of ACT’s Central Heating Lab, an innovative talent development program. The semi-annual theatre event, now in its 15th year, was originally planned as a one-time only fundraiser. More than 750 plays with more than 3,000 artists have followed. ...more...

Surf Scene At Space 4 Art

“Hydrodynamica: Remember the Future” is part of the Getty Museum’s larger Pacific Standard Time arts initiative, which started last October and features more than 60 Southern Californian cultural institutions showcasing the birth of the L.A. art scene. “Hydrodynamica” will feature early surfboard design, much of which was born in San Diego in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and later had a phenomenal impact on the birth of modern surfing and skateboarding. ...more...

Replacing choral folders with iPads

The excellent 9-voice male vocal Ensemble Clerestory  is performing a series of concerts in the next two weeks in Oakland (1/21), Palo Alto (1/22), Belvedere-Tiburon (1/27) and San Francisco (1/29). The concerts feature the typical fare of a wide range of choral music from many periods.

Perhaps less typical is the replacement of traditional choral folders with iPads. Although this should appeal to the green leanings of Bay Area audiences, it begs the question …more…

JAZZ IN FILM NEWS

One of the most intriguing jazz news stories of recent years was revived when Don Cheadle recently confirmed that his plans to make a film about Miles Davis were developing. The proposed project, which Cheadle would both direct and star in, was announced two years ago but had scarcely been mentioned by the Oscar-nominated actor since. Cheadle, of course, has been busy starring in films like Iron Man 2 and …more…

With The Etch A Sketch, Play Can Be Art

Imagine creating an elaborate etched image without ever lifting the stylus from the surface. This is exactly what three Etch A Sketch artists from Portland, Oregon do. Rather than adding material to a surface to make a drawing, etchings are made by taking material away, requiring artists to think in terms of negative space.

I wonder if the toy’s inventor, André Cassagnes of France, ever imagined that artists would use it …more…

Fat Cat

I paid a visit last week to Fat Cat down on Christopher Street with a few friends. I’d forgotten how great this place is!

With some of the best pool to be played in NYC and a really swingin’ after hours jam session every night, what’s not to love? ...more...

Created, written, and hosted by Scott Siegel for The Town Hall, these invaluable concerts each transport present-day audiences back in time with songs from Broadway shows that opened during a particular calendar year, all performed by top talent from the Broadway, concert, and cabaret worlds. ...more...

An Interview with Isaac Layman: A Seattle Artist Finding Paradise in His Own Home

Isaac Layman. Untitled, 2011. Photographic construction, ink-jet on paper. 95" X 59".

Isaac Layman has taken the art world by storm with his evocative, large-scale photographic constructions, which transform the banal into the hyper-realistic, haunting and enigmatic. Drinking glasses, used tissues, heating vents: Any object in Layman’s Seattle home can become the object of an intense visual meditation, captured over and over from subtly different angles by the artist’s high-resolution, …more…

Born in Havana, Cuba, Yonah danced with the Ballet Nacional de Cuba until he was invited to join the English National Ballet in 2011. Entering the company as a first artist, he soon graduated to junior soloist, gaining leads in ballets such as Roland Petit’s Le Jeune Homme et la Mort. ...more...

The Countdown to New York Film Fest’s Fiftieth Birthday

Started in the 1960’s, the New York Film Festival is one of the most highly anticipated film events of the year. While it’s a noncompetitive festival, the NYFF is highly selective, with only around 28 features and 12 shorts chosen each year.  2012 marks the year-long countdown to the festival’s fiftieth year, and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, who produces the NYFF each year, is making …more…
