Looking for something to do tonight that encompasses both your love of fine arts as well as your passion for design and social planning? Tonight, catch the only screening in Cincinnati of Urbanized, a recent documentary on the ups and downs of urban planning.

One third of a design trilogy, Urbanized is a feature length film about growing concerns over urban development. The independent filmmaker from London, Gary Hustwit, looks at …more…

Come Back, Africa Being Screened at the Film Forum Until Feb. 2

One of the reasons I love New York City is that I love it when I have the opportunity to view an old classic on the silver screen.  Starting this weekend on Friday, January 27, Film Forum is holding daily screenings of Lionel Rogosin’s groundbreaking classic, Come Back, Africa.

Here’s a little background on the film:

After making his Academy Award nominated documentary On the Bowery, Rogosin was determined to expose the injustices of …more…

2012 NY Guitar Festival: Buster Keaton and the Sounds of Silence

The New Year is upon us. For New York City concertgoers, this means the arrival of the New York Guitar Festival, and with it the seemingly anachronistic Silent Films/Live Guitars series. ...more...

Start the Year with the Sundance Film Festival

To the general public, the film season in January is pretty much divided up into two categories: Oscar contenders in wide release and the dull lull of new releases that fall to the wayside in light of the Oscar season.  However, January is also the month where the next great independent hit can be found at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah from January 19-25. ...more...

2011 Top Musical Discoveries (a personal list)

Many critics, reviewers, and bloggers end the year with a top ten list of the year’s best recordings, best performances, top news stories, etc. For my record of San Francisco and Bay Area jazz happenings, I want to offer a list of top musical discoveries of 2011. Admittedly, this is a highly personal list and I offer it in the hopes that readers respond with their own discoveries:

Early Music scene …more…

CCA Cinematheque

You know how film festivals keep popping up all over the place?  Yeah…neither do I, and that probably goes for many other Santa Feans.  That being said, there is the most delicious (yes, this is a fitting adjective for the feast on revolving display at either of the two screens in the Cinematheque) array of independent film offerings every week.

The Cinematheque reminds me of art house theaters in bigger cities …more…

For a Silver Screen General Admission, tickets start at $45 (with a $5.95 fee).  You’ll get to …more…

The Critic’s Meter for the Average Viewer

Movie critic legend Roger Ebert

The onslaught of the holidays  also brings on the avalanche of the critic’s film awards.  How much do you let your viewing habits be affected by what the critics say? Are you more likely to see a film because it made the Best Picture list on the National Board of Review?  Are you ready to give Tree of Life a chance because the Toronto Film …more…

Celebrity Safari at Broadway’s Stage Doors

Celebrity spotting is a unique part of the experience of living in New York. And, a far cry from your aunt’s oft-told story about that time that she saw the local weatherman at the supermarket, eagle-eyed New Yorkers frequently spot big-time celebs, like bona fide movie stars and such. While you can never predict when you’ll have one of these sightings, you can treat out-of-town visitors such as your dear auntie to a veritable celebrity safari by catching these shooting stars as they escape the theaters where they perform. ...more...

With the holidays coming up, keep in mind that that someone on your holiday gift list is sure to be a film lover. While the obvious gift is purchasing someone’s favorite movie on Blu-ray, DVD, or via Itunes, we at Arts America like to think of the bigger picture. ...more...

The Artist Inspires Remembrance of the Silent Film Era

While some may balk at the idea of watching a film without sound these days, hopefully sustained momentum behind the Oscar contender, The Artist, will spark a renewed public interest in recognizing the largely forgotten impact of silent film classics. ...more...

Bay Area Arts Mailing List Exchanges Go Big

Are you a Domestic Duo, a Fast Track Family, Country Casual, or New Homesteader? Do you have “Gray Power” or belong to the “Second City Elite?”

These are just a few of the monikers used to label audience members in “The Big List,” a mailing list pool maintained by Theater Bay Area. Because 200 organizations (not all in the Bay Area) have participated in the list since 2008, if you have …more…

Video on Demand, the Wave of the Future?

These days Lars Von Trier is mostly remembered for his unseemly outburst at the Cannes Film Festival. His new film, Melancholia, has been lost in the post scandal shuffle — even with Kirsten Dunst’s Best Actress win at the festival. However, the most interesting aspect about the film is that it quietly launched a controversial way of viewing new movies. Before the film was to be released in theaters on November 11, the film was made available on video on demand first. On October 7, consumers were allowed to view on iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, Playstation and Zune. ...more...

Make Way for the Biopic

By Marion S. Trikosko Public domain

If you’ve been eyeing the movie ads recently, you may have noticed that ’tis the season for the biopic.  You may wonder why this particular time of year is so hot to trot on the entire “life on film” genre.

For the most part, Hollywood adores epic storytelling on real life figures, especially ones that grab the headlines on a regular basis.   What’s interesting is …more…

Jim Henson’s Fantastic World

A friend once said to me, “I had no idea that Jim Henson was so brilliant.”

After visiting Jim Henson’s Fantastic World Exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, my friend came to the revelation that many of us have always known — that Jim Henson was indeed one of the most creative minds in America. It may seem like a far reaching statement to make, especially when …more…

Cultural arts guide

Culture, at its root, is the sum total of our collective intelligence and achievement as a species – the expressions of our creativity as a group of people and a society. It is a delicate phenomenon,  constantly in flux, and seemingly everyone has their own idea about what it is and isn’t. We call dance, art, drama cultural arts because they help people to refine feelings, tastes, thoughts and develop their soul and body, while at the same time reflecting today’s customs and …more…
