The NOLA Holiday Theatre Wrap Up.

Tis absolutely the season to have been seeing theatre in New Orleans.

The month of December had many amazing things to offer to people in town for the holidays.
Over at the newest venue in town, Mid City Theatre, run by Mr. Fred Nuccio, they had two holiday shows to offer.  A.J. Allegra had brought back his perennial favorite, The Santaland Diaries.  Allegra had done the show once already at the now, …more…

Celebrate the holidays at the PMA!

Philadelphia’s Museum of Art is ringing in the holidays with a series of special programs , and this next week is jam-packed with a whole slew of different events. For those looking for a traditionally academic experience, the museum will be hosting “The Christmas Story” which will be a guided tour of the paintings that tell the story of Christmas. Given that the museum’s collection spans thousands of years, no …more…

Merry Unemployment

As the San Francisco Opera goes dark at the end of the year, many tenured members of the orchestra, chorus, and ballet are technically laid off. A loophole in California law allows these artists to claim unemployment insurance payments. Labor law and benefits, created for office and factory workers, poorly fit performing arts; some of the greatest abuses and shortfalls occur in the area of unemployment benefits.

The Beauty of Uncynical Cinema

There’s a beauty to uncynical cinema. You may be asking yourself, what does that mean? Well, let me tell you. It’s the type of film that the latest Muppets movie represents. It’s not the type of movie where there’s a huge amount of death or violence or CGI. There’s not a large amount of blood or guts or gore. It’s perhaps the type of film that more adheres to the …more…

FronteraFest is coming to town

All is relatively calm on the Austin theater scene over the holiday season. Only Zach Theatre is currently offering entertainment, with two shows playing: God of Carnage and The Santaland Diaries. Behind the scenes, however, actors, writers, and all the theater elves are preparing for the 19th annual FronteraFest, a performance smorgasbord that opens January 17 and runs nightly until February 18.

FronteraFest, co-produced by ScriptWorks, is comprised of the “Short …more…

Mannheim “Steamrolls” Into Anchorage

Mannheim Steamroller is coming to Anchor Town, performing Thursday and Friday, December 29 and 30, in Anchorage’s Atwood Concert Hall. This is just in case you’re not so very sick and tired of Christmas music, four days after Christmas, that your hands itch to snap a candy cane whenever you hear “Deck the Halls”. Founded and produced by Chip Davis, Mannheim Steamroller is one of those gigs you either love or hate, nothing in between, sort of like anchovies or Hillary Clinton. ...more...

Will Work For Art

Fundraising for arts organizations can be a challenge even in a strong economy. In Portland, Oregon the Work for Art program helps to support the arts by facilitating employee-giving campaigns at public and private workplaces throughout Oregon and SW Washington. Some of the participating employers even provide matching funds.

These Work for Art donations are then re-directed back to the community, with 100% of the funds that are raised benefiting arts …more…

Mayor Menino Gives Boston the Gift of Music

The holiday season can be an expensive time, because let’s face it, when it comes to spending time with family and friends, it’s easy to have that spare-no-expense attitude. But, with time and money devoted to buying gifts and preparing feasts, how will you actually enjoy the company and festivities? ...more...

Seattle Symphony and Beethoven’s 9th

The Seattle Symphony will once again be ringing in the New Year with a performance of Beethoven’s 9th. The great Choral Symphony has endured as one of the monuments of Western culture since its premier in 1824, and is so familiar that it is difficult to imagine the experience of hearing it new. However, to the listeners in Vienna that day it must have come like a thunderbolt.

The concert marked …more…

“Stamina in the Dream House”

Painter Elizabeth Fox draws inspiration from her past in corporate America. A former New Orleans native, she captures the edginess and contemporary style of a new America in her non- literal paintings of beautiful beings in somewhat mundane everyday situations. Most of her paintings showcase the dominance of males, and the objectification of females in the corporate work world. A modern Picasso in her own right, Elizabeth has a flare …more…

Portland Playhouse’s mission statement says they “hold theatre to be a space in which people of all social, economic, racial, sexual and political backgrounds can come together to celebrate the complexity of our shared human experience” so it is no surprise that their winter offering is Angels in America: Millennium Approaches by Tony Kushner. ...more...

Caravaggio at the Kimbell Art Museum

Until January 8th, the Kimbell Art Museum in Ft. Worth will be hosting an exhibit featuring the works of the infamous Italian painter, Caravaggio (1571-1610). With his dramatic use of light and shadows, Caravaggio brought transition out of the long standing era of mannerism and into a more realistic style of painting that makes his influence on the world of art immense.  Given this, this exhibit does not only feature works of Caravaggio, but also interwoven are works of art from those that he influenced. ...more...

Mannheim Steamroller

I caught Mannheim Steamroller’s Seattle show at the Paramount, and enjoyed it. Does this mean that I have officially entered middle age, or that the group is just that good?

Grammy Award-winner and creator of the group, Chip Davis directs and co-produces the performances annually, but due to health concerns he no longer tours. There are now two tour groups of Mannheim Steamroller to meet the seasonal demand, including six shows …more…

Ahmad Jamal swings through San Francisco

Did anyone attend Ahmad Jamal’s December 10 concert at Herbst Theater? I was looking forward to that concert more than any other event in the SFJAZZ festival, but an unexpected family crisis prevented me from attending. I have searched in vain for a review or blogpost about this highly anticipated event – is it possible that Mr. Jamal came and went through San Francisco and nobody from the Fourth Estate thought to make the concert a matter of public record? The event was sold out, so I’d love to hear from folks who were there! ...more...

Art in the Windows

The ritual viewing of department store windows is part of the official “Christmas in New York” experience, right along with visiting the gargantuan Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center and body-checking your fellow holiday shoppers at the Manhattan Mall.  Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s are among the stores most noted for their holiday window displays.  Personally, though, my vote for Best in Show this year goes to Bergdorf Goodman, which has elevated the window display from whimsical entertainment to enchanting art installation. ...more...

Box Office Observations Part I

A half hour before the first couple ambles through the doors of the lobby, I’m there. I am printing their tickets and placing them amongst the sixty or so other names. This is the nightly ritual of a box office worker.

A half hour later, the window is open and Will Call starts. In the lobby, actors furtively skirt up to the window making sure their complementary tickets are waiting for …more…

Minnesota’s Tradition of Outdoor Painting Thrives

Sunset No. 1: Artist Point, by Neil Sherman

Despite Minnesota’s notorious climate—freezing winters and muggy, mosquito-ridden summers—there has always been a tradition of artists working outdoors, en plein air. In the 19th and 20th centuries, artists like Josephine Lutz Rollins, Alexis Jean Fournier, Elisabeth Chant and Samuel Chatwood Burton preserved, in their oils, watercolors and etchings, landscapes of a Minnesota few would recognize today.

Fortunately, contemporary Minnesota artists are continuing the …more…
