The Lensic

*Sigh*  Where do I even begin with this writer’s official letter of love to the Lensic?  I suppose, in the beginning…

Right.  I grew up (not in Santa Fe) in a bio home and blissed out community of artists, musicians, dancers and avid readers/writers/scribes/scholars.  I have always known that the arts in general, and artists in particular, must have the space to create and perform.  That it is just as vital to …more…

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet

On March 14th, I had the rare privilege to see a professional dance company do a studio rehearsal.  This was two days before the company debuted “Square None”, a new work choreographed by Norbert De La Cruz III.  Aside from the wonderful opera-meets-electronic remixed music, and Austin Scarlett (of Project Runway fame) baroque inspired costumes, the rehearsal showed each of the dancers moving freely throughout the piece and dancing with major …more…

Tickets just went on sale for Feminism & Co., a month-long series of lectures on art, politics, gender, and sexuality at Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, and it promises to be a fascinating experience. The series launches on April 5th with an artist talk by Catharine Opie, an acclaimed photographer whose work is currently showing at the museum in the exhibit More American Photographs.

On Friday, April 13, the museum hosts …more…

Thodos Dance Company Performs Beyoncé… errr, Fosse… in Alaska

Chicago’s Thodos Dance Company is performing in Anchorage on Thursday, April 19, and if that’s news to you, you’re not alone. I just stumbled on the information myself, hidden away on the CenterTix website. The show has hardly been advertised and hasn’t appeared on most local arts calendars, and tickets aren’t yet for sale. But no, Beyoncé is not in the dance company. I’ll get to her in a minute. ...more...

Austin Playwrights Blossom in the Spring

Rehearsing for The Austin Latino Playwrights Festival

I come from the land of the ice and snow: Canada – where winter is the season during which you stay inside as much as possible…kind of like summers in Austin, but with more wool clothing. Ah, but spring! No matter where you live, spring brings hope and resurgence and new beginnings and the desire to revel in the wonder of it all.

April …more…

Bill Viola’s “The Raft” Examines Human Reactions to Disaster

Still from "The Raft"

Today in the Bloch Building at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City, Missouri), I saw The Raft by Bill Viola, a 10 and a half minute video. The Raft begins with a diverse group of people waiting, as if for a bus. The group is a mixture of ages and races, both men and women as well as a transgender person.  Filmed at high speed and …more…

Now showing at the MFAH is Revelation: Major Paintings by Jules Olitski, which covers key works by the late artist. Although his paintings from the 1950’s-1970s show the impact of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field art, he merges these two styles to create a distinct …more…

A Temperamental Topic

Earlier this month, Boston Children’s Theatre presented Reflections of a Rock Lobster, the real story of a 1980’s high school student who sues his school for the right to take his boyfriend to prom. Tackling the issues of prejudice, bullying, homosexuality and civil liberties, the show was performed by and for high school students.

For many Massachusetts residents, the topic of homosexuality and gay rights brings up quite a bit of …more…

Too often in concert music, the bassoon, string bass, trombone and others on the lower end of the sonic spectrum are neglected as solo instruments. This premise is the driving force behind the “Yale in New York” series’ De Profundis: The Deep End led by Artistic Director David Shifrin on …more…

A Heart as Big as a Baby’s Head: ‘Camino Real’ @ The Goodman Theatre

You know you’re experiencing good theatre when patrons are walking out because of moral objection rather than poor quality. The Goodman Theatre serves up a very intriguing interpretation of a lesser known Tennessee Williams gem. Camino Real (pronounced re-AL) is a complex drama with a short production history since its initial 1953 debut. This rare production is the brainchild of Goodman artistic director Bob Falls’ pairing of Calixto Bieito …more…

DC’s Source Festival Culls Plays for 2012

Many playwrights nationwide were disappointed recently, and a few elated, as Source Festival, Washington, DC’s annual summertime splurge of brand new work, announced its 2012 line up. In its fifth year, Source Festival is a coveted production opportunity. A fully financed and fully mounted production of a previously unproduced ten-minute play is a rare opportunity, and in this era of budget-strapped theaters unwilling to risk ticket sales on new work, …more…
